Examples

These are examples of the materials which will be found in the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World and its accompanying Directory. The Atlas volume contains a keyto the maps, the maps, and the Gazetteer, an alphabetical listing of all names which appear on the maps, map number, and grid reference. The associated Directory is laid out on a map-by-map basis, offering an Introduction, a Bibliography, an alphabetic listing of the place names, like the information in the Gazetteer, and typically one or two scholarly references for the sites and names marked. These examples come from different maps and have been chosen to represent the project’s scope. All examples were chosen by Project Director Dr. Richard Talbert.

	Key : This is a reproduction of the Atlas’ key; it shows the symbols used for cultural and physical features, which colors represent which historical periods, scale, altitude tints, etc.

	Segments from Map 86 -Paphlagonia: This shows about one-quarter to one-third of Map 86 (1:1,000,000 scale) to demonstrate the presentation of physical and cultural landscape.

	Introduction to Map 40 – Patavium: An introduction, part of the accompanying Directory, draws attention to those features of a map which call for special explanation — problems of landscape change or afforestation, for example, criteria of “significance” adopted, and apparent variations in settlement arising from uneveness of modern exploration.

	Bibliography Page for Map 30 – Iol Caesarea: For each map, the Directory offers a bibliography listing the sources used to document all place names and features.

	Directory Page for Map 56 – Pergamum: A section of the alphabetical Directory with place names, periods of occupation, their modern equivalents, and scholarly references.

	Directory Page for Map 60 – Creta: A section of the alphabetical Directory listing unnamed features (aqueducts, roads, etc.), “Unlocated Toponyms” (names impossible to mark because of the lack of sufficiently accurate information), and “False Toponyms” (names considered a misreading or mistaken claim on the part of previous scholars).
